North American Development Group

Collaborating closely with North American Development Group, AVID Engineering, Foster-Conant, and the city, Cuhaci Peterson played an integral role in crafting this center.

Our contributions spanned conceptual designs, meticulous site planning, hands-on construction administration, and comprehensive engineering services including structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection.

The Seminole City Center had an intense entitlement process, challenging us to create a design that satisfied both the requirements of the local government and our client’s needs. To navigate this challenge, we established design guidelines that adeptly adhered to zoning ordinances, encompassing factors like glazing percentages and signage criteria, all while maintaining an aesthetically pleasing overall design.

Positioned within the heart of densely populated Pinellas County, this development is surrounded by residential properties, prompting a careful consideration of both the front and rear elements of the power center’s design. This prompted our team to be creative as we aimed to craft a design that not only resonates with the local residents, but also effectively serves the varied requirements of the customers who frequent this area.

An outdated indoor mall was demolished to make way for both a new outlet and power center in West Palm Beach, Florida known as Tanger Outlets Palm Beach.

Located at the intersection of Interstate 95 and Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard in the City of West Palm Beach, the original Palm Beach Mall was developed in 1967 as the first fully enclosed climate controlled mall in the State of Florida. New England Development of Boston, Massachusetts, and Eastern Real Estate of Woburn, Massachusetts, purchased the 86-acre property with visions to redevelop it into a vibrant, rebranded, outdoor shopping destination known as Palm Beach Outlets. Preliminary design concepts for Palm Beach Outlets evolved into a comprehensive development package that included an overall Master Development Plan, a two-phased Site Plan, Design Guidelines, Signage Program and Landscape Plan.

Cuhaci Peterson was responsible for providing design services for the Power Center piece; supporting both the intricate demolition of the existing mall and the construction of the new Power Center element. Cuhaci Peterson collaborated with Urban Design Studios in the master planning and directional approvals for the project. Cuhaci Peterson phased the new construction to accommodate an existing retailer that eventually closed so that the Power Center could be built all at once. Despite the schedule being fast tracked, Cuhaci Peterson maintained multiple CD sets for accommodation of various changes that occurred throughout the construction process.

This 40,000 square foot store features a custom façade, made from reclaimed materials from Florida orange groves, while nods to the local culture can be seen throughout the design. Additionally, a juice and coffee bar, along with pizza station give the typical in-store café some extra pizazz.

Titus Landing, with its lifestyle center concept, is the premier location for retail along the Space Coast in East Central Florida.

Featuring dining, a variety of specialty stores, special events, and the prestigious Parrish and Mayo Medical Center, Titus Landing is the leading entertainment and retail space for area residents and approximately 3 million tourists visiting America’s Space Coast annually. Titus Landing also affords a view across the Indian River Lagoon of the Kennedy Space Center, which launches over 20 commercial and NASA rockets annually. This project involved the demolition of the existing Miracle City Mall, and the redevelopment of the site into a mixed-use retail and office lifestyle center.

Along with this, the project was rebranded by Cuhaci Peterson and renamed to Titus Landing. We worked with the Developer and Civil Engineer and the Landscape Architectural firm Dix.Hite + Partners to develop the various elements for this mixed-use center. A key feature includes a central open landscaped area that will also serve as a community event space along the main axis from the entrance through to the movie theater building. Public facilities were designed and provided in support of events that take place in the heart of the new center.

The Mills Park retail project provided Cuhaci Peterson a unique opportunity to bring numerous shops, eateries and a grocery store to the site of the former Nebraska Lumber Company located in a trendy Orlando, Florida neighborhood within the Mills 50 district.

With different retailers come different requests as do design requirements from the project developer, civil engineer and there are aways local jurisdictional requirements that must be met. The goal was to get everyone on the same page and Cuhaci Peterson accomplished this by getting all stakeholders to communicate graphically on what was required.

The project featured reclaimed wood from the old lumber yard in trellises and signage throughout, as a way to recapture the historical significance of the site.

The former Dinky Line Railroad, which bordered the development on the East, was converted into The Orlando Urban Trail. Area residents love these bike and walking trails that have become key in the connectivity of Mills Park to the surrounding neighborhoods. Services provided by Cuhaci Peterson included construction administration, construction documents, design development, structural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering as well as fire protection and permitting services.

In the end, these new builds offered the vendors the utility they desired and honored old sites all the while giving the local community a new place to thrive.

In 2019, the property developer began a full overhaul of the 1990s era mall, including adding a new five-story office tower and renovating all its stores.

As part of the widespread renovation effort, Cinépolis wanted a complete refresh of its 14-screen, 648-seat, 51,371-square-foot theater and to expand its food menu while in the process. And that’s where we came in. The newly redesigned space includes a full-service kitchen and bar with remote ordering and tableside service. All theaters are equipped with reclining seats featuring a push-button ordering system where customers can place their order with a waiter and enjoy a restaurant-quality meal prepared fresh by a professional chef.

One of the biggest challenges our team faced was the entry stairs, which are the first thing customers see when they step through the theater doors. The stairs were not ADA compliant, so they had to be completely reimagined to bring them up to code. After consulting with the original structural engineer for the mall, our team found a solution that exceeded our client’s expectations and satisfied the code requirements.

Once atop the entry staircase, you’re greeted with high-end finishes from custom zebrawood veneers to gold metallic wallcoverings along the promenades, and marble mosaics at the bar and lounges. Guests can enjoy the six-screen video wall in the primary seating area that features the latest in sports, entertainment, or news. With a variety of lounge areas, there are ample places to relax and unwind before a movie, or between a double-feature!

While having the Walmart name on your client roster is impressive, our relationship with the mega-retailer is one that we are proud to say is so much more than just a portfolio booster.

For Cuhaci Peterson, the most significant stats from our years working with Walmart are not the ones measured in percentages and numbers but are rich stories filled with perseverance, heart and legacy.

As a company founded in the grocery and retail niche, working with Walmart (one of the world’s largest retailers), is an honor we don’t take for granted. Yet, set against the backdrop of doing massive, complex things at scale, what we hold near and dear are the tales of everyday heroes who embody the CP values by elevating relationships, and putting people over projects.

Starting in 2009, our relationship with Walmart began when Amin Fikry. As a former Principal at CP, and master of aspirational thinking, Amin took a massive leap of faith by reaching out to the retail giant to introduce our firm and ask if there was anything they could use our help with. At the time, Amin saw something in us that we didn’t yet see in ourselves, so landing this esteemed and well-respected retailer seemed unattainable to much of the firm, but his perseverance and belief in CP paid off! What started with a series of bathroom remodels blossomed into a longstanding relationship thanks to Amin, and CP’s dedication to customer service and providing exceptional results.

In 2016, Amin Fikry passed away due to complications related to his battle with diabetes, but his legacy continues to have a lasting impact here at the firm. Starting that year, Cuhaci Peterson dedicated its ride in The Florida Tour de Cure to his memory, and to date has raised more than $200,000 for the American Diabetes Association. In addition, we continue to honor Amin’s legacy in our annual corporate awards ceremony with The Amin Fikry Aspire Award, recognizing an employee who best represents our vision to give everyone the power to aspire, create and accomplish without limits. Amin was the epitome of that.

Today, Cuhaci Peterson works on many Walmart projects covering a wide variety of services in the state of Florida. We are honored to work with them on a variety of project types and important corporate initiatives. There have been many instances where our work has resulted in much more than just a beautiful end result, and the stories of ‘Sweetbay’ and ‘Peachtree’ are two that are the pinnacle of our value of bringing communities to life.

Sweetbay was more than just a convenient store to the people of St. Petersburg, Florida. Riding their bikes, or walking, much of the town either worked at or shopped at Sweetbay. As a staple in the community, the people of St. Pete desperately needed an affordable replacement when the Sweetbay doors closed in 2013. Walmart decided to open a store in that location, and from the start of the takeover, it was evident to CP team members like Jaison Moras, Vice President of Electrical Engineering, that this was more than just another remodeling project. From the very first meeting, there was an amplified level of urgency by the Walmart team, and Jaison uncovered that not only would Walmart be providing the St. Pete community with the affordable retail solutions they needed, but they were also going to be providing opportunities for existing Sweetbay workers to get their jobs back.

Jaison kicked it into high gear and expedited the permit-to-production process, working tirelessly until opening day. “What was amazing to see was the people of the community, listening to their stories of how grateful they were that we were able to pull this off in three months,” Moras said.

“The conversations overheard by community members on that wonderful opening day made me think about how important our profession is, and how what we do in these buildings is connected to life in a community,” he added.

In late August of 2022, a fire broke out in the paper goods section of the Peachtree Walmart in Atlanta, Georgia. This four-hour-long fire scorched a hole through the roof, destroying massive amounts of merchandise and a substantial portion of the sales floor. Needing to close the store to repair the damages, this unforeseen event would have a significant impact on those who relied on Walmart for their shopping and prescriptions and for the workers who were now unable to work to support their own families.

Our team was already in the process of a store remodel for that location, so after a conversation with our structural teams, Senior Project Coordinator Sean-Paul Muiznieks put the current project on hold and began a plan of attack on this disaster relief project. With an anticipated reopening date which would be pushing right into the critical holiday season for the Walmart store, our team was all hands on deck, elevating this project to top priority. With the incredible work of our team, in seamless partnership with the civil team and Walmart’s amazing team, we were able to hand off our portion of the project in time for Walmart to reopen just in time for Christmas!

Greg Simpson

Our team is dedicated to deploying our expertise and ingenuity to bring value to our partners at Walmart. We strive to learn from each opportunity we receive and continually look to improve our processes and service.
